Enter the world of book decoration. In bookbinding, finishing refers to the process of decorating the outside of a book, including the lettering of the spine and covers, any additional tooling, and any inlays and onlays.

In this workshop you will be introduced to TOOLING. You will explore the use of a number of tools and techniques used for the lettering and finishing of book covers. You will be using metallic and pigment foils; carbon and blind impressions. Not working on books but sample blocks you will have the chance to practice— learning about pressure, dwell and heat.

Materials:
Binding materials will be provided. Participants may bring their own usual small tools kit. However the bindery has a full range of tools and take home tool kits will also be available for sale.

IMPORTANT:
Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.

Other Information:
The bindery will be open by 9am. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be a lunch break of 30 minutes. There is a fully equipped kitchen adjacent to the bindery if you wish to bring your lunch, but otherwise there are cafes and markets nearby.
