DESCRIPTION:
Endpapers are a crucial component of a book's binding. Although we think of the binding as the cover, the endpapers are also part of the binder's remit. Endpapers can be highly decorative and very beautiful or simply plain but more importantly they have a functional role, forming the connection between the book block and the cover.
Traditionally the binding selected by the binder for a bookblock was contingent on its size and what use it would have. Library books and account ledgers received solid, durable bindings, stationary books were often light with flexible, soft covers, special commissions received luxury bindings in leather. All these different bindings had different endpaper structures.
In this course you will make 9 different endpaper structures and learn which structures are appropriate for which bindings.
This class was originally part of the NSW TAFE Book Restoration Course. It was taught be Ted Chapman at the TAFE and we are thrilled that he will teach it again here are the Guild.
