Do you have a book which is valuable, precious or fragile and desperately needs some protection? A bespoke box is what you need! In this class you will learn how to make a simple clam shell box.

To ensure you are learning the important details, you will have the opportunity to bring two books and make the boxes specifically for these books. The skill of making good boxes is in accurate measurement, so the end result is a box which fits the book snugly and closes well.

Your tutor:
Nicholas Beckett has worked in book conservation in a major Sydney institution for many years. Prior to this he worked in London at Bookends Bindery making boxes for the British Library Collection.

Materials: All materials will be provided.

Tools: The Guild bindery has a full range of tools but participants may bring their own tools if they wish. A metal rule, a pencil, an awl, a sharp knife will be useful.

Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Please wear closed in shoes.

The bindery will be open by 9am. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be a lunch break of 30 minutes. It is recommended that you bring your lunch. There is a fully equipped kitchen adjacent to the bindery. Shops and cafes are not close.
