LEATHER SOLANDER (SLIP)CASE
TUTOR: Ted Chapman
DATE: 15-16 August
TIME: 9.30am – 4.30pm
COST: Members $300 Non-members $350
Limited to max. 8 participants only.
Advanced binding skills and experience with leather paring necessary.
This workshop will take you through the process of making what has sometimes been called a Solander (slip)case (as opposed to a Solander box). The solander (slip)case is covered in leather and made in two parts. The book is inserted into the base and a lid encloses it.
To achieve the best results, a dummy block of binding board will be made up to replicate the book to be housed. (This block can be also used as a support when finishing the spine at a later date.)
You will be working with precision to construct a housing to snuggly fit a book. This workshop is a great way to extend and challenge your box making skills with a beautiful end result.
Tools: Participants are required to bring their own tool kits, particularly important are a paring knife and strop.
If you don't have a paring knife, it will be possible to buy one from Ted on the course.
Materials: all materials including leather are covered in the cost.
Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Please wear closed in shoes.
The bindery will be open by 9am. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be a lunch break of 30 minutes. There is a fully equipped kitchen adjacent to the bindery if you wish to bring your lunch, but otherwise there are cafes and markets nearby.
